In the vibrant world of independent filmmaking, few voices resonate as authentically as Noah, a South Florida-based writer and director whose debut feature film, Clocked, is making waves on the festival circuit. With a diverse portfolio of experiences and a passion for storytelling, Noah’s journey from growing up on film sets to creating deeply impactful narratives is nothing short of inspiring.
Growing Up on Film Sets
For Noah, filmmaking is woven into his DNA. Raised amidst the creative chaos of film sets due to his father’s work as a cinematographer, Noah’s journey began with a love for movies nurtured by cherished memories of watching horror films with his grandfather and frequent trips to the cinema. His passion evolved in high school when he wrote his first full-length, R-rated comedy feature for extra credit. This early exploration of storytelling set the stage for a decade-long journey culminating in Clocked.
From Coen Brothers to Rob Reiner
Noah draws inspiration from a wide array of filmmakers, citing the genre-spanning works of the Coen Brothers and the early directorial career of Rob Reiner as benchmarks. Directors like Celine Sciamma, Julie Ducournau, Derek Cianfrance, and Asghar Farhadi have also profoundly influenced his approach to storytelling. Noah’s commitment to crafting diverse narratives mirrors his respect for filmmakers who refuse to be confined by genre.
Behind the Scenes of Clocked: A Story of Identity and Resilience
Clocked is more than a film; it’s a heartfelt exploration of identity, resilience, and chosen family. Inspired by Noah’s experiences within South Florida’s theater community, the film delves into the lives of queer individuals navigating rejection from their biological families. At its core is a boxer’s journey, symbolizing the physical and emotional transformation required to embrace one’s true self. Noah’s portrayal of these struggles is deeply personal and universally resonant.
"I wanted to write a film for people who are ‘in-between families,’” Noah explains, highlighting the importance of acceptance and self-love. This authenticity has already touched audiences, with one emotional reaction from a festival attendee illustrating the film’s profound impact.
Overcoming Challenges in Independent Filmmaking
Independent filmmaking often involves navigating a minefield of challenges, and for Noah, financing stood out as a significant hurdle. However, his resourcefulness and commitment to collaboration turned obstacles into opportunities. Clocked was shot in just three weeks with a single camera and lens, with family playing a pivotal role both on and off set. From a father-and-son grip team to an all-LGBTQIA+ cast for queer roles, the production exemplified unity and passion.
One scene in particular, a heartfelt exchange on a park bench overlooking the ocean, stands out as a scene he is remarkably proud of. Despite unpredictable South Florida weather, the team managed to capture the moment with remarkable authenticity, aided by what Noah refers to as a stroke of luck from the “Film Gods.”
"On an indie film you don't really get the opportunity of bigger budget films to flip days or add days to the schedule so we just had to hope that we could get in and out of the location before the downpour. I promise you, it rained all over the area around us but not in our 40 square foot space of filming."
Building a Support Network in Filmmaking
Noah emphasizes the importance of collaboration and kindness in an industry often perceived as cutthroat. “You want to be someone that people will recommend for jobs in rooms you aren’t even in,” he advises, encouraging aspiring filmmakers to foster strong, supportive relationships within their communities.
He also urges writers to focus on stories that excite them personally, rather than chasing trends. “Your portfolio should represent you and your interests,” Noah shares, underlining the value of authenticity in creative work.
Spreading the Message of Self-Acceptance
As Clocked seeks distribution, Noah’s dedication to creating meaningful cinema remains persistent. His vision of empowering audiences to embrace their true selves continues to guide his work, promising a bright future for this talented filmmaker. With his unique perspective, heartfelt narratives, and collaborative spirit, Noah exemplifies the transformative power of storytelling in film.
